How Long Does Custom Manufacturing in China Take? (Realistic Timelines)

Ask five suppliers and you'll get five optimistic answers. Here are the honest ranges, stage by stage, so you can plan a launch date that actually holds.

Custom production has a rhythm, and it's predictable — if you know the stages. Here's what each one takes, what you control, and what to plan for door-to-door.

The five stages

Stage 1 — Quote and artwork: 1–3 working days. You send your idea, quantities and logo. A proper supplier replies with an itemised quote and a digital mockup. If this step takes a week, that's a warning sign about every step after it.

Stage 2 — Pre-production sample: 5–10 working days. The single most important stage. You receive a physical sample and approve it — or request changes. One revision adds roughly a week. Skipping the sample to “save time” is how people end up with 500 products they can't sell.

Stage 3 — Your approval: 1–3 days (you control this). The fastest way to shorten your total timeline is deciding quickly and giving written approval once, with all feedback in a single message.

Stage 4 — Bulk production: 10–16 working days. Most custom products — pins, patches, apparel, packaging, stickers — land in this window. Glassware and complex multi-part products run longer. Quantity barely changes this: 300 pieces usually takes about as long as 100.

Stage 5 — Shipping to your door:

MethodTimeBest for
Air express (DHL/FedEx/UPS)5–10 daysUrgent, light orders
Matson express sea12–16 daysThe sweet spot for most orders
Standard sea30–40 daysHeavy, non-urgent, margin-hunting

Total: what to actually plan for

ProductRealistic door-to-door
Enamel pins / patches / stickers4–5 weeks
Printed apparel4–6 weeks
Packaging boxes / bags4–6 weeks
Glassware (200+ pcs)6–8 weeks

Add a buffer week for your own decision time. If someone promises custom enamel pins at your door in 10 days, ask them whose pins those are.

What causes delays (almost all of it is avoidable)

  • Late artwork changes — the number one killer. Lock your design before sampling.
  • Slow approvals — three days of “thinking about it” becomes three weeks across a project.
  • Chinese New Year — factories pause for 2–3 weeks (late January/February). Order before mid-January or after early March.
  • Re-sampling because specs changed — decide sizes, colours and materials up front.

For selected products there's a shortcut: our US Fast Line ships from U.S. facilities with fixed one-piece pricing and 48-hour dispatch — days, not weeks. It's the fast lane when a launch date is fixed and production in China doesn't fit.

For the full process in detail, see How It Works, and for what each category's minimum looks like, read MOQ by Category.

Next step: tell us your product and target date — we'll confirm a realistic timeline in the quote, and flag anything risky before you commit.
